The NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament (March Madness) begun today… loving it! I got my teams picked - UNC, Texas, Wisconsin, Pitt to name a few… but lets talk sports team logos… I hate the final four logos… they always have gradients that look tacky and cartoonish. The cheesy hat and belt looks like some american fast food joint too. One logo I do like is the new Washington Capitals logo. Its kind of a throw-back to their original logo and I just love the perspective on the letter “L” like a hockey stick… simple and sharp which produces well in black and white, key for a proper logo! Its no wonder why there is a large increase in throw-back uni sales… because those old 2D designs and shapes of yesterday still look good today.

 

Check out this limited edition Helvetica Documentary Blu-ray packaging designed by Experimental Jetset. Holy “@#&%” I love it… is it wierd that type faces turn me on? Experimental Jetset is one of the best when it comes to using my favorite font. if you haven’t seen this documentary yet then don’t come back to my blog until you have. thanks!!!

Most notably known for her illustrations on Keane’s Album Under the Iron Sea, Sanna Annukka has a magical folklore style that looks unbelieveable in print. Inspried by her Finnish background, nature, and music, Sanna’s able to create flat 2D illustrations that pop! She starts by designing block shapes and silhouettes, then gradually infuses patterns and details. Her colour palates are chosen with great care and I love the way the negative space joins her compositions by flowing through the illustraions as if it were a colour swatch itself. Go buy some of her beautiful prints here…

A friend turned me on to this band The Hanks who just dropped their new album on myspace. You can’t get it on iTunes yet ’cause they raised funds and produced it themselves, sans record label, but you can listen and order from their myspace. I love the use on Avant Garde type and the photograph is dead on. I wonder if the little white dust and hair particles were photoshopped or not. Very cool non the less…

K… mixed feelings here! Jeff Buckley is my all time favorite musical artist. I adore everything he did in his tragically brief existence on this planet… His cover of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah is #2 on iTunes right now. That’s rad! But, the only reason is because Simon Cowell from American Idol said it was one of his favorite versions after contestant Jason Castro preformed it on the show this week.

I’m very happy for Jeff and his family to have the success on iTunes but I have mixed feelings because I HATE American Idol. Let’s be honest, no one becomes an Idol, the only contestant to have a successful career after several seasons is the first one Kelly Clarkson who isn’t doing that well now anyways. It’s a dumb reality show and it’s hurting the music industry with this plague of fake no talent wannabe’s with doomed music careers. It’s sucking the attention of teenie fans who should be embracing real music. So I guess I’m glad it has introduced them to Jeff but…

I just don’t like my Idol to be associated with American Idol…

I love the International Typographic Style (ITS) and have this weird attachment to Porsche… Probably since it was my Dads first car and he always had one when I was growing up. Thus, my first car was a red 1967 Porsche 912. I found it on Bowen Island from this little old lady who lived in NY and used it as her summer car… classic! And my next car will have to be a late 70’s 911SC. I’m debating over whether or not to get a “so ugly its hot” brown or taupe colour that I saw yesterday… So here is one of a few Porsche designed owner’s manual that inspires me. I love the type and the repeating fade. My dad had a lot of similar looking posters in the garage and old chainsaw manuals from Husqvarna that must have seeped into my subconscious. I love the rich orange… bad image though…
